The best places to watch the sunset in the Algarve

The best places to watch the sunset in the Algarve

In August all roads lead to the Algarve. The south of Portugal is a paradise for tourists and nomads who enjoy nature and are looking for beach houses.

The Algarve has returned in all its splendour, warm and festive, and people have returned to the Algarve. In the month of August alone, those villas and flats with sea views are inhabited by over a million people. They come from all over the world to enjoy the mythical summer in the south of Portugal. According to official indicators, the year 2022 can already be considered the best tourist year ever. It also means that two years of contention dictated by the pandemic have not been able to erase from holidaymakers' memories the beaches, sun, golf, gastronomy, hospitality and entertainment that have always been present in Vilamoura/Quuarteira/Quinta do Lago, or Monte Gordo/Vila Real de Santo António, or even Carvoeiro/Armação de Pêra, the three Algarve resorts that have registered the biggest influx of foreigners, particularly from Britain and Germany. When it comes to choosing where to settle down with family and friends during the summer period, Portugal stands out in in the range of destinations.

Hotels are sold out and investors are once again looking for houses to buy. Living by the sea is the dream of most people and, for this reason, the beach house market is once again in turmoil. It is no surprise, once again, that the Portuguese coast is in evidence when looking for houses with balcony and garden on the coast. Especially at a time when Portugal also tops the list of the best countries for working remotely. It's a kind of paradise for nomads who prefer nature, security, proximity to the sea and the pleasure of watching the sun set every day.

Thinking of these people, LUXIMOS Christies International Real Estate, a luxury real estate company with offices in the Golden Triangle, between Vilamoura and Vale do Lobo, tried to draw up a list with the best places to watch what is surely one of the most beautiful natural phenomena in the world: the sunset. With a toast: in all these magical viewpoints there are houses for sale, as you can see here.

1. Cape St. Vincent, Sagres

They call it the end of the world, but if there's a place where the world could have begun, it's here, in this small village in the parish of Sagres, in the municipality of Vila do Bispo, home of the surfers' best-loved beaches. They call Cape St. Vincent the end of the world because it was from there that the Portuguese caravels set off to discover the rest of the world. Today the opposite happens, it is there, in that same place, that every day dozens of people from all over the world gather to watch the sun hide in the sea. It is one of the most romantic and unmissable places in the Algarve. At the end of the day, even if it is summer, you should not forget to take a warm coat, so that the wind does not interrupt the view. If you want to see the sunset from home, these are some of the best opportunities in the market.

2. Cacela Velha, Vila Real de Santo António

Not only is it one of the best places to watch the sunset, it is also one of the best places to get a panoramic view of the whole eastern Algarve. The village of Cacela Velha, located right in front of the Ria Formosa and the sea, resting on a fossil cliff that, according to legend, is about a million years old, is one of the most beautiful places in the world at sunset. As this village is part of the eastern route of the Portuguese Way of St. James, it is not unusual to see hundreds of pilgrims waiting for the magic hour when the sun sets. But because this beach is also a favourite with the Portuguese, sometimes, at the end of the day, this is the point in the Algarve where there is the greatest concentration of happiness per square metre. And yes, it is possible to find luxury apartments on this spot on the Algarve coast.

3. Ria Formosa, Loulé, Faro, Olhão, Tavira and Vila Real de Santo António

It's like seeing the world through a kaleidoscope, only life-size. As if someone had set up a stage between sea and nature. The Ria Formosa, which runs through the boroughs of Loulé, Faro, Olhão, Tavira and Vila Real de Santo António, offers a rare spectacle of natural beauty in the evening. It also offers a boat service, which allows you to visit its group of five islands: the island of Barreta, 10 kilometres long and only 700 metres at its widest; the island of Culatra, seven kilometres long and a paradise for divers; the island of Armona, six kilometres of crystalline waters and a choice area for those who like to catch bivalves; the wonderful island of Tavira with its long stretch of sand and its magical beaches (the beach of Tavira, the beach of Terra Estreita, the beach of Barril and the beach of Naked Man); and the island of Cabanas (ex island of Abóbora), seven kilometres long, only 70 metres wide and with the most beautiful dunes ever. Is it possible to live here? É. See here.

4. Ponta da Piedade, Lagos

First of all, there is a collection of rock formations that you absolutely must get to know: Ponta da Piedade, Forte da Bandeira, Praia da Batata, Praia do Pinhão, Praia D Ana, Praia do Camilo, Praia dos Nudistas, Arco do Triunfo, Praia Grande, Cozinha, Garagem, Sala, Catedral, Corredor, Monstro, Praia do Barranco. You can visit them all by boat on the same day. Then, yes, get ready for an unforgettable sunset. Ponta da Piedade is one of the main tourist attractions in Lagos, so you will hardly be able to watch the natural spectacle in silence or solitude, but the view from the lighthouse is so breathtaking that you can't miss it. If you want to have a place of your own, here, take these houses for sale in review.

5. Atalaia Viewpoint, Porto de Mós Beach, Lagos

By now you're probably wondering if there isn't a beach in the Algarve that is also a great place to watch the sunset. There are several, but we highlight Praia de Porto Mós, located in Lagos. At the end of the day, the sand takes on the colour of gold and up there, to the west, is the Atalaia viewpoint. From here you can see the whole coastline as far as Sagres, the high ochre cliffs, the cliffs painted green, the turquoise blue water below, and all this, duly illuminated by those orange rays of the sun at sunset. It is an unforgettable sight. If you want to enjoy it from the balcony of your house, see here.
