RCR Arquitectes has built an international reputation on a different idea.
Founded by Rafael Aranda, Carme Pigem and Ramon Vilalta, the studio's work explores the relationship between architecture, landscape, materials and place. In 2017, the three architects were jointly awarded the Pritzker Architecture Prize.
That philosophy feels particularly appropriate at Palmares.
The Signature Residences use clean horizontal lines, generous terraces and large areas of glazing to establish a close relationship between the interiors and the landscape beyond them.
The effect is not architecture competing with an extraordinary view.
It is architecture framing it.
From the apartments, the eye is repeatedly drawn beyond the building: towards the golf course, across Meia Praia and out to the Atlantic.
When the setting is this good, restraint can be considerably more luxurious than spectacle.
The Algarve is often discussed as though it were one homogeneous destination.
It is not.
Lagos and the western Algarve have a different geography and rhythm from the resort belt further east. The coastline becomes more dramatic, the Atlantic feels more present and the historic city of Lagos gives the area an identity that exists independently of tourism or golf.

The 27-hole course was designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. and is divided into three nine-hole loops — Alvor, Lagos and Praia.
They are deliberately different.
Alvor has more of a parkland character, with mature trees and views towards the hills.
Lagos moves through parkland and lakes before approaching the dunes.
Praia takes the game closest to the Atlantic, through coastal dunes and a more links-like landscape.
Different combinations of the three loops can therefore create different 18-hole experiences.
But perhaps the most memorable characteristic is simpler than that.
The sea is almost always present.
Palmares says around 90% of its tee boxes have ocean views.
That tells you something about the golf course. It tells you even more about the land on which the entire resort sits.

Fairways create open views. Greens and dunes preserve distance between buildings. Carefully maintained vegetation gives homes a visual connection to land that might otherwise eventually be developed.

Lagos provides the town.
And Meia Praia sits between the two.
The word “luxury” is used so frequently in property that it can lose much of its meaning.
More marble is luxury. A larger swimming pool is luxury. Another bedroom, another amenity, another service.

Palmares appeals to a slightly different sensibility.
It makes particular sense for someone who values contemporary architecture but does not want architecture to overwhelm its surroundings; who plays golf but also wants the Atlantic; who enjoys resort services but wants a real town nearby; and who sees privacy and landscape as forms of luxury in their own right.
For that buyer, the Western Algarve has a compelling argument.
Perhaps the best way to understand Palmares Signature Residences is to consider what came first.
Not the apartments.
Not the swimming pools.
Not even the golf course.
The hills, the dunes, Meia Praia, the Alvor estuary and the Atlantic were already there.
The most successful parts of Palmares seem to recognise that fact.

You notice the building.
