Portugal has spent decades building a reputation as one of Europe's great golfing destinations. In 2025, it was once again named the World's Best Golf Destination, as well as Europe's Best Golf Destination for the fourth consecutive year.
But something else has been happening around the fairways.
Golf has increasingly become part of a much broader residential lifestyle. International buyers are not necessarily looking for a home simply because there is a good course nearby. They are looking at the landscape, architecture, privacy, restaurants, beaches, international connections and, ultimately, whether somewhere will still be enjoyable on the days when nobody picks up a club.
Portugal is particularly interesting in this respect because golf properties in Portugal can offer remarkably different ways of living.
In the Algarve, that might mean a new private club in Vilamoura, an established resort community in Vale do Lobo or contemporary architecture overlooking the Atlantic in Lagos. Near Porto, the same idea translates into forests, space and country living within easy reach of the city.
Four residential developments illustrate those differences particularly well.
Vilamoura has been associated with golf for generations, so creating something genuinely different here is no small achievement.
The Els Club Vilamoura has done precisely that.
Opened for play by Ernie Els in July 2025, it is the first Els Club in Europe and the Algarve's first invitation-only private members' golf club. The course is a substantial redesign of the former Victoria Course, once home to the Portugal Masters.
For Els, a four-time Major champion and former world number one, the project also marked the arrival of his golf club concept in Europe.

The residential development comprises 78 villas, with contemporary architecture, gardens and a strong emphasis on outdoor living. Residents also have access to the Vista Club, adding leisure, wellness and social facilities to the experience.
What makes Springs interesting, however, is not simply a list of amenities.
It is timing.
Buyers are entering an established destination — Vilamoura already has its marina, beaches, restaurants and international community — just as an entirely new golf proposition is taking shape within it.
Someone who wants to play golf in Vilamoura already has considerable choice. Someone who wants a home associated with the first Els Club in Europe is looking at something much harder to replicate.

Vale do Lobo tells almost the opposite story.
The resort has been evolving for more than six decades and has become one of the defining residential addresses of the Algarve's Golden Triangle.
What is unusual is the arrival of something genuinely new within it.
The Residences at Vale do Lobo is the first new residential development at the resort in more than 20 years.
Designed by international architecture practice Broadway Malyan, the project comprises just 44 homes: 25 apartments, 10 linked villas and nine townhouses, with completion expected in 2027.
The Residences sits beside the Royal Golf Course, one of Vale do Lobo's two courses, alongside the Ocean. Beyond golf, the resort extends towards approximately two kilometres of Atlantic coastline and brings together restaurants, sport, wellness and an established international community.
This makes buying here fundamentally different from buying into a newly created resort.
Much of the uncertainty has already disappeared.
The restaurants exist. The courses are mature. The beach is there. Generations of owners have already tested the proposition of spending part — or all — of the year at Vale do Lobo.
The Residences therefore does not have to invent a lifestyle around its homes. It inherits one.

Travel west along the Algarve and the landscape begins to change.
At Palmares, near Lagos, the relationship between the golf course and the Atlantic is impossible to miss. Meia Praia stretches along the coast below, while the Alvor estuary and the ocean become part of the wider landscape.
Palmares Signature Residences makes particularly good use of that setting.

Portugal's golf lifestyle does not end in the Algarve.
Vale Pisão, in Água Longa, Santo Tirso, offers something none of the other three destinations can: resort and country living surrounded by nature while remaining close to Porto.
The estate extends across approximately 150 hectares of forest, gardens and golf.
Instead of the Atlantic, the landscape here is green and wooded. Instead of being somewhere primarily associated with holidays, Vale Pisão sits around 25 minutes from central Porto and approximately 22 minutes from Francisco Sá Carneiro International Airport.
Its mountain golf course was designed by Portuguese golf architect Jorge Santana da Silva and is complemented by an academy and practice facilities.
But focusing only on golf misses much of the point.
For someone relocating to Northern Portugal, or a family looking for a primary residence outside the city, the possibility of living surrounded by greenery without becoming disconnected from Porto is compelling.

These developments are not really competing to offer the same experience.
Springs at The Els Club is about Vilamoura, exclusivity and the opportunity to live beside the first Els Club in Europe.
The Residences at Vale do Lobo offers the depth of an established resort and the particular combination of golf, beach and community that has made the Golden Triangle an international residential destination.
Palmares Signature Residences brings architecture much more strongly into the equation, with contemporary design, golf and one of the western Algarve's most distinctive coastal landscapes.
And Vale Pisão replaces the Atlantic with forest and countryside, offering space within easy reach of Porto.
Choosing between them therefore has less to do with identifying the “best” golf development in Portugal than with deciding how you actually want to live.
Portugal has almost 90 golf courses distributed across its tourism regions. The Algarve remains its most internationally recognised golf destination, but the variety of experiences available around those courses is increasingly relevant to property buyers.
For some, the deciding factor will always be golf.
For many others, it will be everything around it.
The marina and energy of Vilamoura. The established community of Vale do Lobo. The architecture and Atlantic views at Palmares. Or the ability to live among 150 hectares of greenery and still reach Porto in around 25 minutes.
The right choice therefore begins with a fairly simple question:
How do you actually want to live when you are not playing golf?
