Some places seem to be born under a generous star; a few nations manage to transcend their own size. Portugal is one of them — small in territory, yet immense in its ability to inspire, attract and create value.
At the World Travel Awards 2025 – Europe, held on 22 October in Sardinia, Portugal was distinguished as Europe’s Leading Destination, among 17 awards, reaffirming what is long felt in the streets of Porto, the beaches and golf courses of the Algarve, and the vineyards of the Douro: Portugal is today a global symbol of excellence.
The city of Porto was once again named Europe’s Leading Urban Destination, surpassing iconic capitals such as Amsterdam, Barcelona and Berlin. It is the fourth consecutive year that a Portuguese city has received this award — an unprecedented sequence in the history of the World Travel Awards.
The recognition is both symbolic and economic: Portuguese tourism generated over €30 billion in 2024, accounting for around 10% of GDP, potentially reaching 15% when indirect revenues are included.
Yet Portugal’s success extends far beyond tourism. The country has become a benchmark for real-estate investment, particularly in the luxury residential and tourism segments. Cities such as Porto and the Algarve show consistent appreciation, attracting investors from over 40 nationalities, with Americans, Britons, French and Canadians among the most active.
This positive momentum rests on solid fundamentals: political stability, legal security and modern infrastructure, combined with a cost of living up to 30% lower than in France or the UK, depending on region and lifestyle. Added to this are exceptional environmental standards, with 400 Blue-Flag beaches and more than 90 golf courses, making Portugal once again the World’s Best Golf Destination (2024).

What distinguishes Portugal, from an investor’s viewpoint, is its ability to turn intangible assets into tangible value. Its mild climate, welcoming spirit, gastronomy and heritage translate into steady inflows of foreign direct investment, new residents and high-end developments now competing with Europe’s finest.
The luxury sector best illustrates this maturity. Branded residences, integrated resorts and coastal villas are redefining European exclusivity. These are not simply properties — they are ways of life. And this is where Portugal stands apart: offering authenticity with refinement, tradition with innovation, charm with confidence.
The World Travel Awards 2025 are more than trophies; they recognise a way of life that has become an international mark of prestige. When a country wins travellers’ hearts, it inevitably earns the trust of investors.
Portugal continues to shine — not only across tourism stages but in the global art of living.
A land where the sun is constant, beauty subtle and time unhurried.
A place to visit, invest and belong.
