The most recent Christie's auction attracted the attention of the art world by achieving a total value of almost 7.5 million euros. Among the many works sold, five pieces by Portuguese artist Maria Helena Vieira da Silva sold for an impressive total of €420,000.
At the centre of attention was the oil on canvas entitled 'Curiosités', painted in 1980, which exceeded expectations and was sold for 220.5 thousand euros.
This is not the artist's first success at Christie's. In December last year, her painting 'Construction' sold for 245,000 euros. However, the record for Vieira da Silva was set in 2018, when 'L'Incendie 1' was auctioned in London for 2.3 million euros, far exceeding the estimate.
Born in Lisbon in 1908, Vieira da Silva emigrated to Paris at the age of 19, looking for opportunities to study art. She was always deeply connected to the French capital, where she lived until her death in 1992, leaving behind an invaluable artistic legacy. The continued success of her works at auctions such as Christie's reflects her indelible impact on the world of contemporary art.
