José Mourinho, one of the best-paid football coaches in the world, had just invested a small fortune in the real estate sector of the Western Algarve. Once aware of the investment, the journalists asked him if he wasn't afraid of taking risks. The "special one", as he became known in England, was quick to respond: "Risks only in football. Otherwise, I'm a cautious and thoughtful person. That would be the first of several investments of the Portuguese coach in luxury houses in the Algarve. Cristiano Ronaldo followed in his footsteps and many other international football stars also bought houses in the Western Algarve to spend their holidays in southern Portugal. It's in this western part of the natural region of the Algarve that the stars of the king of sports take refuge in the summer.
If the Algarve is beach and cliff, transparent water and mild climate, gastronomy, security, entertainment and breathtaking landscape, the western Algarve, which includes the municipalities of Albufeira, Aljezur, Lagoa, Lagos, Monchique, Portimão, Silves and Vila do Bispo, adds glamour, hospitality and many dream villas to it, It's easy to understand why the region has been collecting tourism awards for several years, and why it has been repeatedly elected as the best beach destination in Europe and one of the best in the world. Far from being just a destination of contemplation, the western Algarve is also becoming more and more the fixed residence of those who choose a new lifestyle, with more quality and well-being, and with no concerns. That choice is not inseparable from the offer that the Algarve presents in various areas: in the real estate business, the luxury houses in the Algarve for sale are those with the most impressive architecture, a more seductive natural environment and a more competitive price in Europe; the coast boasts almost 200 kilometres of beaches, most of them blue-flagged; the golf courses appear in all specialty publications as the best in the world; Faro International Airport is only four kilometres from the city and has connections to every corner of the world.
The discoveries that can be made in the region do not end in a lifetime, let alone in a holiday: Cape St. Vincent and its fortress in Sagres, the Monchique mountains and the caves of Lagos are just three examples that cannot but be listed. For those who like entertainment, the nightlife of Albufeira and the Vilamoura Casino are a must. For those who have children, Zoomarine, Slide&Splash or Aquashow water parks are an inexhaustible playground. If you enjoy the nautical world, you'll find Vilamoura's extraordinary Marina and an endless amount of sports on offer, including Kayaks, Stand Up Paddle, Jet Skis, flyboarding, surfing, snorkeling, water skiing, diving or just quiet boat trips.
Last but not least, getting to know the Algarve's gastronomy is a passport to paradise: it's not only the seafood and fresh fish that abound there and with which the region's chefs have added Michelin stars, it's also the sweets (the traditional almond and fig sweets), the liqueurs and the unforgettable soups.
No manual or guide can ever exhaust everything there is to be said, experienced and enjoyed in the Algarve. So we've selected only five beaches, different from each other, where you can find the house where you want to live every year in the summer, or maybe forever.
We start with Portimão, because it is considered the "capital of the Western Algarve", since it is the largest and most important city in this area. Here there is a relatively small beach, Prainha, which has the peculiarity of having an elevator through which you go down to the fine golden sand. In this stunning place, located between Ria de Alvor and the estuary of the Arade river, there are luxury villas with swimming pool, which are both close to the beach, to the mountains and to the golf courses. This is a dream opportunity for those with good taste.
Ancão beach, located right in the Ria Formosa Natural Park, is one of the most distinguished in the region. It has an extensive sandy area, surrounded by dunes, and an original slope, full of aromatic herbs, which makes perfect sense in a municipality like Loulé, where it is impossible not to taste the snacks. In this territory, defined by Moorish streets and which concentrates the Algarve's stars - Vale do Lobo and Quinta do Lago -, the houses are a rapture. In this region, no architectural detail is left to chance and no property offers less than a garden and a swimming pool.
Lagos is one of the most cosmopolitan places in the Algarve and Praia Dona Ana has been considered one of the best beaches in the world on several occasions. The turquoise-blue water, the golden slope and the fine white sand are unparalleled. As it couldn't be any other way on such a popular beach, the surroundings offer everything a day at the beach deserves, beautiful restaurants and great terraces. Here you will find houses of a very unusual futuristic daring, designed with modern and luxurious equipment.
And here, in the middle of the beach, there's a landscape dominated by fruit trees such as almond, fig and carob trees, and a historical gem, such as pottery workshops, where you can still see the typical ceramics of the region working. Carvalho Beach, next to the famous Benagil Beach (queen of Instragram), is still considered a secret of the Algarve. In the immediate vicinity of this paradise, there's this very special property, which combines marble staircase with Italian tiles and brass handrails, in a luxurious and unique project.
Among the 25 beaches that exist in Albufeira, almost all with a blue flag, we decided to suggest Falésia beach, because it is near Vilamoura Marina and because it delights those who like beaches that constantly display low tide. In addition, its extensive sandy beach, about three kilometres long, is one of the most sought-after by families. And if you like to spend the summer with your family, discover this farm, with stunning sea views, swimming pool, tennis court and private access to the beach on foot.
