5 reasons to buy an apartment in Porto

5 reasons to buy an apartment in Porto

There are much more than 5 reasons to buy a house, an apartment or a villa in Porto. There is culture, architecture and luxury real estate from Downtown to Foz.

Porto is the perfect-extent city, with the ideal soul temperature. Real estate growth reflects its dynamism and, at the same time, its romanticism. Elected three times as the best European destination of the year (2012, 2014, 2017), a feat that not even the great capitals of Europe like Paris, Prague, Rome or Berlin have ever managed, Porto is distinguished, first of all, by the two features already mentioned - and that do not come in tourist guides: quality of life and people.

The British daily “The Telegraph” extended the charms to the whole country and found more than 20 reasons why everyone wants to get to know Portugal. We decided to focus only on Porto and to list 5 Reasons why all hearts fall across the city.

1. Culture. The third most beautiful bookstore in the world

Historically, Porto is a literate city, which soon realized that without culture the city does not exist. This cultural energy can be seen in the number of international festivals that the city promotes throughout the year in various disciplines, from contemporary dance to theatre, from literature to cinema, but also in its many century-old institutions. This is the case with Lello Bookstore, which is considered the third most beautiful bookstore in the world.

Recently, Brazilian host Ana Hickmann was in Portugal to participate in the 113th anniversary of the celebrated bookstore, located in the historic centre of Porto. Dazzled, Hickmann walked through every corner of the neo-Gothic house that inspired the British J. K. Rowling to write "Harry Potter", climbed up and down the tremendously-photogenic red staircase and marveled at the 1906 façade. The Brazilian also met the premium room, which houses the first edition of “Os Lusíadas”, of the poet Luís de Camões, which is worth 250 thousand euros, and the first French edition of “The little Prince”, autographed by the author himself, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, valued at 18 thousand euros.

Downtown, where Lello is located and where much of the cultural and night life takes place, there is nowadays a set of luxury developments, such as this, which allow you to enjoy all urban dynamics without having to drive. Porto is a city that you walk around on foot.

2. Sport. Surfing in Matosinhos

Matosinhos, a city united to Porto by geographical proximity and by the Atlantic Ocean, is today the destination of choice for those seeking a healthy life dedicated to sport and to the outdoors. For many, it is actually the best beach destination in Europe. Over there it is possible to walk by the sea waterfront, to ride a bike, to swim or to practice surfing.

Matosinhos beach, glued to the International Beach of Porto, concentrates a large number of surf schools and is, due to its complexion - medium waving and weak wind -, considered perfect for surf beginners.
Moreover, the city, due to its large sea coast, is also one of the best places in the country to eat seafood and fresh fish, any time, any day. Besides, the real estate market sprinkled the seaside with new construction and is selling some of the most spacious and luxurious apartments in the county (T2, T3, T4). We’re talking about real estate surrounded by nature, with garden, gym, swimming pool and a broad view of the sea. Confirm here one of these exceptional houses.

3. Wine. The basements in Gaia

There is no Porto without wine, but the true place of Port wine, produced in Alto Douro Vinhateiro, is on the opposite bank of the Douro River, in Vila Nova de Gaia. It is there, in that viewpoint-city over the coloured canvas of the Riverside area, that all temptations arise. In an alignment of 15 cellars that guard the divine nectar that rivals the best wines of France, Italy, Spain or Argentina, it is almost a sin not to enjoy the unforgettable experience of a cup.

Portuguese producers and wines add prizes every year and appear in all relevant international rankings. That is why the possibility of being able to live in that place, crossed by the beautiful Ponte D. Luís I, sprinkled with terraces, typical restaurants and rabelo boats, is irresistible.

But it wasn't always possible to buy a house on that side of the river. Currently, there are some private condominiums that exert on us the same fascination as Bacchus. Here are two breathtaking examples.

4. Architecture. The city of the three Pritzkers

When someone says 'Escola do Porto', you already know that it is contemporary Portuguese architecture we are talking about. The Porto School of Architecture has gained prestige all over the world and has created disciples everywhere. It is a school founded between the end of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century that reflects the strength of character and personality of the people of the city, and is always simultaneously open to what is new and international. A school with a strong visual identity and, in a very simplistic way, totally anti-baroque. It's a school of pure thought.

The top name of this school is Álvaro Siza Vieira, who designed the Serralves Museum, the redevelopment of Avenida dos Aliados or the complex of Leça swimming pools, but also Eduardo Souto de Moura, who designed the first House of Cinema Manoel de Oliveira, the Metro stations or the spectacular Braga stadium. Both have already been awarded the architecture nobel prize - Pritzker Prize, that is.

In a city where one breathes the trait of these two world-architectural gurus, it is only normal that the choice of architects for each new building requires a redoubled rigour and requirement. For those who choose and for those who are chosen. It was under this pressure that the Dutchman Rem Koolhaas was elected to design the bold project of Casa da Música, inaugurated in 2005, right in the middle of Boavista roundabout. In his favor, he also had a Pritker on his résumé.

The houses for sale on this axis almost contaminate eachother with a unique aesthetic rigour in architecture, but also with the ineffable privilege of living in the cradle of the works of three Pritzkers. Confirm it here. Or here.

5. Douro. A unique landscape in the world

Douro is one of the best places in the world to escape from the world. And, for that very reason, to make the investment of a lifetime. You can bet everything on a plot area or a farm ready to live on. Take a look at this one.

Considered one of Portugal's greatest treasures, Douro is the place where some of the best wines in the world are born. But the magic of Douro is not only its wine and its short vineyard fit in the wine region classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site where wine has been produced for 2000 years, nor only its wonderful farms and real estate properties from the 19th century. It is also an absolutely unique landscape in the world. It is the railway line by the river, the prehistoric tunnels, the built bridges, the mythical railway stations decorated in tile. And it is an air you cannot breathe anywhere else.
